(little brides) Creatures of Great Hope
This installation was shown at Birdhouse Laboratories in Knoxville, TN in March of 2008 as part of a two person show, Sewn Together.
Balance is a precarious moment of potential. Rather than stability, I am interested in exploring the meeting of two oppositional forces, inside and outside, heaviness and lightness, attachment and displacement, protection and entrapment, leaving a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty. I would like to engage the viewer in a visceral way, utilizing imagery and forms from both nature and the body. I relate these forces to emotional counterpoints, hope is a moment where fear and desire meet, and memory is an undefined yet familiar feeling. I depict and utilize forms that are themselves moments of transition: orifices, folds and seams. Similarly, journey and narrative take place in a nonlinear manner, cycling backwards and forwards, inward to outward and outward to inward. This cycle continues in a poetic way, shifting between the deeply introspective and personal and expanding to universal and collective.
